Flames and Steel: The Chromatic War
Capital of halfling lands
Basque is the Northernmost major city on the continent. While not as large as some others, it is one of the busiest in terms of shipping.
The harsh conditions around the city make farming difficult, so most towns and villages focus on herding or fishing for their income. The thick pelts, strong hide, and huge fish make for bountiful trade with the more southerly cities.
In order to survive the beatings the sea and weather throw at it, the city has thick stone walls surrounding the west, north, and eastern sides. These also branch out and extend into the sea itself, offering a safe harbor for trade ships.
Despite the weather, Basque is proud of its five ‘culture gardens’. Each contains plants from around the continent, even those at the opposite, much warmer, end. Some have even been gifted by important dignitaries. There is a botany school near the center of town, and students are the keepers for these places.
In addition to the gardens, Basque boasts a pastry school, several private magic academies, the continent’s third largest library of arcane tomes and artifacts, and it plays host to the Markstal Boating Festival every other year. The seat of halfling government is also here, found at the Synhedrion.
